Changes in Word document format from Windows to Linux

There are times when I will create a Word document in Windows then it turns out ugly in Openoffice in Linux. The fonts and layout changes with the conversion.
Import one document created in one application and opening it in another will always have conversion problems. Try loading a Word document into Wordperfect or even different versions of MS Office.
There are two ways to lessen this problem.
One way is to install Microsoft font on our Linux box. This will work for Ubuntu. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Open a terminal
  • if your are using Ubuntu or Debian, enter the command sudo aptitude install msttcorefonts
  • Enter your password and then MS fonts will install from the web.
Another way is to create your document in MS Office and save it as an Open Document Format. This can be done by installing Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office to your MS Office. You download it at http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/
